…And the Games begin! The Lakeland 2010 Alberta Winter Games Open at the Centennial Centre.

And the games begin at the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre. Almost 2400 athletes, coaches and officials plus 1600 spectators were in attendance for the opening ceremonies of the Lakeland 2010 Alberta Winter Games at the Centennial Centre. Friday February 5 is the kick off of the sporting events at the Centennial Centre with Male and Female Volleyball and Female Hockey.

Athletes and spectators paraded in to the RJ Lalonde arena Thursday night to celebrate at the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Games. MC Kathy McKale kicked of the evening followed by the grand entrance of Platform Guests accompanied by 4-Wing Band CFB Cold Lake. The entertainment for the evening kicked off with the drumming in of the Athletes, by Drum Café, a rousing rendition of O Canada sang by Catherin Laquerre and the stylings of USA Break Dancers.  Greetings from Games Chairman of the board Phil Kushnir and the Premier of Alberta Honorable Ed Stelmach were proclaimed, the athletes oath was said in choir and a word from the opening Ceremony Sponsor ATCO brought the ceremonies to its Climax. In came the torch and the Cauldron was set ablaze. To round out this thrilling event audience members and athletes alike where entertained by the high flinging acrobatics of aerial group High Strung and the return of the electrifying rhythms of Drum Cafe.

Overnight the RJ lalonde ice was uncovered and groomed to host female hockey. The Centennial Centre’s EnCana Arena will also play host to female hockey. You can also come cheer on the Male and Female volleyball players in the Flint Field House.

If you didn’t make it to the opening ceremonies it’s not too late to experience the excitement of the games. Friday February 5 and Saturday February 6 and Sunday February 7, the Centennial Centre is playing host to Male and Female Volleyball and Female Hockey.
