The Lakeland 2010 Winter Games wrap up at the Centennial Centre

After an exciting start the Lakeland 2010 Alberta winter games did not disappoint. From the opening ceremonies to the last medal presentation the winter games showed how the Lakeland community can pull together to create a truly inspiring event.

The Winter Games culminated in a thrilling and action packed weekend for the Centennial Centre. Thursday February 4 marked the opening of the games when 4000 people packed the RJ Lalonde arena to enjoy the opening ceremonies. This capacity crowd set the attendance record for the arena. From 7:00 am the next morning the Centennial Centre was at capacity with athletes, parents and spectators to compete in and cheer on male and female volleyball and female hockey. The C2 was roaring with cheers and excitement right until the closing ceremonies at the Centennial Centre Sunday February 7.

A main factor of the success of these winter games was the support of the community. 2875 volunteers worked to make these games possible; truly a testament to the Lakeland region’s community spirit.

The sport development from the games was evident. Our local Zone, 7, received the Ministers cup for most improved zone since 2008 games. This growth in sport will continue to benefit the community long after the competitions have concluded.

The Centennial Centre is proud to be a part of the lasting memories and the community spirit that has come from the Lakeland 2010 winter games and would like to thank all volunteers for the exceptional job they did.

The C2 Team will be blogging all week on our facebook page about our exciting encounters with the games. Come share your memoires of the games with us.
